The 60 minutes that changed everything

For over 20 years I stood at the front of a classroom. At first I absolutely loved teaching. But somewhere around year ten the frustration crept in. The system felt heavy. A quiet voice kept whispering: there is more for me than this.

So I started searching. Mindfulness. Relaxation techniques. Meditation. I wove what I could into my work and my life. It helped. But it wasn’t it.

Then in 2018, at a staff wellbeing day, I walked into a laughter yoga session almost on a whim.

Sixty minutes later my whole life had changed direction.

It wasn’t just fun. It was a full body awakening. Something cracked open in me that I hadn’t even realised was closed. I walked straight up to the facilitator afterwards and said:

“I need to be on your next training.”

That’s what laughter yoga does. It doesn’t just make you feel better in the moment. It shifts something at a cellular level. It bypasses the overthinking, the self-doubt, the stories you’ve been telling yourself for years and gets straight to the truth of who you already are.

It’s like a homecoming. A celebration of yourself.

I got certified in February 2019. And I’ve never looked back.

Going all in

I started showing up – local events, community spaces, anywhere that would have me. Then COVID hit and I took everything online.

During that strange surreal time I came across a video of Joe Wicks talking about his “ten year overnight success.” And something in me just knew.

I was here to do for laughter and joy what Joe Wicks had done for fitness.

I handed my notice in at the start of 2021.

Weeks later, my dad died suddenly of a heart attack.

I’ll never know if I’d have found the courage to leave if it had happened before I’d already decided to take the leap. What I do know is that grief strips everything back to what actually matters.

And joy – real, embodied, permission-giving joy – mattered more than I ever knew.

I left teaching in July 2021 and went all in.

What happened next

Since then I’ve brought laughter yoga to iconic places like Glastonbury, Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place Festival, Mind Body Spirit, The Big Retreat and BBC Radio 2 – where Fearne Cotton described my session live on air as a brilliant release and so contagious.

I’ve transformed team energy at corporates such as Siemens, Unilever and The LEGO Group and worked with organisations across the UK and internationally.

And I’ve held space for thousands of people ready to stop waiting and start truly living their 365.

Not because I had it all figured out.

But because I kept saying yes to the thing that lit me up and trusted it would lead somewhere.

You don’t have to have everything figured out to feel joy. But you do have to love yourself and believe in yourself first. Joy isn’t the starting point, it’s what becomes available when you do the foundational work.
